Absenteeism

Under the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, all schools are obliged to submit attendance reports to Tusla.

  • Schools submit a Student Absence Report twice yearly to Tusla, notifying them of all pupils that have been absent for a total of 20 days or more, regardless of the reasons for absence. It is important that you submit "Reasons for Absence" for your child through the Aladdin app. The number of days that your child has been absent are available to you through the Aladdin app.
  • Separately, schools can submit an Educational Welfare Referral to Tusla. This is when the school principal has a concern in relation to the school attendance of a pupil.
  • Since January 2022 all students on a reduced school day are notified to Tusla.
  • Schools must notify Tusla when there is an intention to expel a student and when the expulsion is confirmed.

Schools are obliged to submit an annual attendance report for the whole school at the end of each year.New Paragraph
