Dont be A Lazy Bean, Be a Runner Bean!!!

Road to Beijing - Winter Olympic Schools Challenge

                                   11th -20th Feb

The Road to Beijing is in a new adventure virtual activity challenge. This 4-week challenge encourages schools to get active and learn more about the Winter Olympics happening this February in China. School teams will log their physical activity which will be converted to a distance which will help their team travel virtually from Dublin to Beijing, China.

       Start:    Dublin

Stop 1:  France (Home of the First Winter Olympics)

Stop 2:  Austria (Team Ireland Pre Games Training Camp)

Stop 3:  Beijing (Host City of the Winter Olympics)

The challenge is part of the Olympic Federation of Ireland’s Dare to Believe Olympic Schools Programme, and will see Team Ireland calling on schools across the country to join them on the road to Beijing. The challenge offers schools across the country to take part in a fun, interactive and educational journey with Team Ireland athletes.

Teachers can log their student’s activities, 15 minutes at a time, and watch their tracker bring them across the world on the road to Beijing.  There will be three stopovers en route for all involved, where students will learn about some of the Olympic Values, the history of the Winter Games, and get some insights into the lives and sports of the Team Ireland snow sport athletes. There will be spot prizes, art challenges, and quizzes to make sure that all interests are catered for! The focus for this challenge is exploring the joy of effort and the wider benefits of sport and staying active, with topics like teamwork, visualisation, motivation and goal setting discussed on the way.

Students can fill out their own activity log to keep track of their physical activity.

Wall Sit Challenge

This week, we learnt all about Freestyle skiers and how they need exceptional strength and agility.  One exercise they focus on in their off-season training is the "Wall Sit".   So we gave it a go!!!

It's all about technique....

  • Stand with your back against the wall
  • Gradually lower your back down the wall, bending your legs at your knees
  • When your legs are at an 90 degree angle, stop and hold the position
  • Children in each pod throughout the school where brought out onto the yard, given a well distanced position on the wall away from the next child and were shown the position as demonstrated by Ms Cull
  • Then children got into position and Ms Cull started the timer
  • As each child fell, their time was recorded

The children really enjoyed this challenge, looking forward to the next one!!!

Lateral Jump Challenge

Lateral Jumps is another dryland workout that our Freestyle Skiers do in order to build strength and agility. So, we gave that a go as well....

Technique

  • Spread out so that each person is at least 2 meters away from the next person
  • Place 2 cones a distance of 70 cm apart or else draw a line of chalk on the ground 70cm in length. We opted for the line of chalk as it is more visible.
  • The challenge is to laterally jump over the area marked by the cones as many times as you can in 45 seconds.
  • Be sure to count each time your feet touch the ground
  • Children in each pod in every class was brought out onto the yard, every child has given the chance to record their best number of jumps.
  • Each child's number of jumps were recorded

After the success of the wall sit challenge, the children were very eager to start the next one.  The excitement and enthusiasm combined with the breathlessness and laughter afterwards concludes another successful activity.
